Teeth Whitening in Edinburgh
Custom-fitted trays, professional-strength gel, and results that actually last. Not a strip from the internet.
OVERVIEW
Citrus Dental Care provides professional teeth whitening at 1 Meadow Place, Edinburgh EH9 1JZ, near The Meadows. Whitening is carried out using the Boutique Whitening system with custom-made trays fitted to the patient’s teeth. Treatment costs £395 and is completed at home over a period of two to three weeks. Results depend on the patient’s natural tooth colour and the type of staining present. Whitening is a private treatment and is not available on the NHS.
What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?
When summer finally arrives in Edinburgh and folk start spending their evenings walking along Middle Meadow Walk, smiling in photographs, catching their reflection in café windows, it’s around that time most people start thinking about their teeth. The whitening kits from the chemist have been tried. The results were underwhelming. The strips slipped, the gel barely reached the back teeth, and a week later it was hard to tell whether anything had changed at all.
Professional teeth whitening is different because it’s made for your teeth specifically. At Citrus we use the Boutique Whitening system, a professional-grade treatment that starts with custom-fitted trays made from impressions of your own teeth. A bleaching gel is loaded into the trays, which you wear at home overnight for a period of two to three weeks. Because the trays fit precisely and the gel is considerably stronger than anything available over the counter, the results are noticeable, even and genuinely braw. This is proper professional whitening, not a gimmick.
Is Teeth Whitening Right for Me?
Teeth whitening works best on natural teeth that have yellowed or dulled with age, or stained from coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking. It is less effective on teeth that are grey in colour, on crowns, veneers, or composite fillings (which don’t respond to bleaching agents), or on very dark intrinsic staining that has other causes.
If you’re planning to have composite bonding, veneers, or any new restorations fitted, whitening should be done first. Composite and porcelain are colour-matched to your existing tooth shade at the time of treatment. If you whiten afterwards, the natural teeth will lighten while the restorations stay the same colour, which creates a mismatch that can only be fixed by replacing the work.
Before starting whitening, your teeth need to be in good health. We’ll confirm this at the consultation appointment, and if any issues need addressing first, we’ll tell you clearly what they are and what they’ll cost.

Making Whitening More Manageable
At £395 teeth whitening is one of the more accessible cosmetic treatments, but if you’d prefer to spread the cost alongside other treatments you’re having done at the same time, 0% finance through Tabeo is available.
Whitening is often combined with composite bonding or Invisalign as part of a broader smile improvement, and finance allows you to manage all of that as a single monthly payment rather than multiple separate upfront costs. We’ll walk you through the numbers honestly before anything is booked.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening
Yes, when carried out by a registered dental professional using clinically approved products. Whitening gel purchased without a dental prescription and sold online is not regulated in the same way and can cause damage to the teeth and gums. Professional whitening at Citrus uses Boutique Whitening gel prescribed and supplied by a GDC-registered dentist, which is the safe and legal way to whiten teeth in the UK.
Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during or shortly after whitening, particularly to hot and cold. This is common and usually settles within a day or two of stopping treatment. Boutique Whitening offers lower-concentration gel options for patients with naturally sensitive teeth, which reduces the risk while still achieving good results.
Results vary depending on your natural tooth colour and the type of staining present. Yellowing and age-related discolouration typically respond well to whitening. Grey tones and intrinsic staining from certain medications or fluorosis are less responsive. We'll give you an honest assessment at the consultation of what's realistic for your teeth specifically, rather than showing you a shade guide that may not reflect your actual outcome.
Whitening results typically last one to three years with good oral hygiene and moderate consumption of staining food and drinks. Coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking all accelerate re-staining. Top-up gel used with your custom trays extends the results and is considerably cheaper than repeating a full course.
Whitening gel only affects natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, and composite fillings will not change colour during whitening, which can create a mismatch if those restorations are visible. If you have existing restorations in your smile zone, speak to us at the consultation and we'll advise honestly on whether whitening is the right approach.
Teeth whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. This is a precautionary recommendation rather than a known risk, but it is the standard clinical guidance and the position we follow at Citrus.
